The Medical Director position presents a unique opportunity to join our management team by working collaboratively with providers and all members of our care teams towards achieving coordinated patient centered care.

Position Summary: Under the general supervision of the Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Andrew Saal, the Medical Director is responsible for directing patient care teams of physicians, mid-level practitioners, allied health providers, and nurses in all health center sites. The medical director oversees physicians serving as clinical site leaders, and plays an integral role in agency care transformation and population health initiatives.

Supervision Exercised: Provides leadership to all Clinical Staff functions.

Position Responsibilities

  • Provides medical direction and additional administrative duties including utilization review, quality assurance and development of clinical practice guidelines
  • Prepares reports for the senior management team and Governing Board. Collaborates with executive team and operational clinical team to innovate and advance agency projects.
  • Supervises physicians and clinicians; oversees nursing department, and nurse care management teams.
  • Enhances in-house dentistry, optometry, podiatry, behavioral health and related programs, while building bridges to community specialists and social service agencies to improve efficiencies and expand the scope of service for patients.Establishes positive relationships with local medical community and attends local medical society functions.
  • Assists with clinical provider recruitment and retention efforts

Physician Duties

  • Interviews patients to obtain history, performing physical examination, ordering lab and other tests, prescribing medications and treatments.
  • Provides continuity in managed care for patients with pre-existing long term problems
  • Makes referrals for secondary and tertiary care.
  • Performs medical procedures according to privileges issued.
  • Provides health maintenance visits – evaluating for immunizations, and providing anticipatory guidance and referrals; performs contract and special physical examinations and family planning screening and education.
  • Documents all patient contact accurately in the medical record.
  • Performs as an active member of the medical team.

Directorship Duties And Responsibilities

  • Attends, participates, and leads groups and standing meetings as assigned
  • Develops and manages a budget, including communicating monthly financial reports to practice staff with the support of administration
  • Monitors quality and appropriateness of medical care
  • Provides guidance and leadership for performance guidelines. Assists with mentoring new clinicians. Supports continuing education processes and medical education
  • Develops policies and procedures
  • Oversees clinical peer review and assists with risk management process
  • Helps direct integrative care processes for agency
  • Investigates patient complaints involving standards of care and provider matters
  • Manages physician behavior and impairment issues

  • Other duties as assigned, including but not limited to participation on clinical committees, providing education, quality review and/or other activities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to perform each position responsibility satisfactorily with or without reasonable accommodation. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential duties of the position.
  • Must be computer literate with ability to learn and regularly use the PCHC electronic health record (EHR) system, software programs relevant to medical data abstraction and population health management, and Microsoft Office. Ability to interpret clinical data and compile reports requested.
  • Must be able to read, write and speak English.

Education and/or Experience

  • Completion of an accredited primary care residency program, with active Board Certification (or eligibility) in a primary care specialty
  • Preference given to prior work experience in a public health or community health center settings, and previous experience as a Medical Director
  • Preference for an advanced degree in MPH, MMM, MBA or similar population health or medical management field. Candidates willing to pursue an advanced degree also encouraged to apply
  • License And / Or Certification
  • Current licensure as a physician (MD / DO) to practice in the State of Rhode Island by the State Board of Medical Examiners.
  • Current DEA certification
  • Current CPR Certification required
  • Valid Rhode Island Driver’s License
  • Current Immunization Records
  • Current PPD
  • Must be able to meet and maintain current PCHC credentialing and privileging requirements, including maintaining active board certification in a primary care specialty

Special Requirements

  • Must be willing to travel between PCHC health centers in the city of Providence. Must be willing to work evening hours and weekends if necessary.
